You may not be a basketball fan, but I will assume you understand the value of $90 million and the possible effects it may have on one’s choice of vehicles.
The NBA’s 2015 Defensive Player of the Year, Kawhi Leonard drives a 1997 Chevy Tahoe. The same 1997 Chevy Tahoe he owned as a teenager in California when he nicknamed it “the gas guzzler”... and still drives because “It runs and it’s paid off.”
Sports Illustrated did a fascinating profile of him recently and it is well worth a read regardless of your NBA fandom.
A few more interesting facts about this ‘97 Tahoe driver:
- His only sponsorship is Wingstop, which he agreed to because they give him coupons for free mango habanero wings
- He is 6'7" with a 7'3" wingspan and 11-inch hands
- During the off season he shares a 2 bedroom apartment in San Diego with one of his high school friends

I was going to say wrong, but having test driven a couple of GMT400s before I got my 4Runner, I can confindently say that I’d rather have my 4Runner that is falling apart. It still feels more together. Though, he wouldn’t fit in it.

My cousin plays for the Jazz and make $15 million a year.
His first year of playing, he didn’t even cash all his paychecks. He just sorta let them sit around.
He also drives a P85 Model S.

Those GMT400s will last forever, but they usually get super rattle-y and loose after around 120k.

Respect. People like to hate on the Spurs, but Pop and Duncan do a hell of a good job surrounding themselves with solid, stable dudes.

Yeah, he's my grandfather’s brother’s son’s son. So somewhat distant, but still interesting.

so he’s making sure he doesn’t go bankrupt within three years of retirement. A lot of pro athletes would do well the follow his example.

Still the best generation of Tahoe. IMHO. And you could get at least $3k for one of those in running condition, regardless of miles.

We could be buds. Wife and I have:
‘04 Malibu LS V6 w/242k
‘01 Dakota QC 4.7L w/168k
Outlier: ‘09 Buell 1125CR w/11k soon to be FS. God forbid I keep the reliable mode of transportation...
Combined KBB: pocket lint. Seriously though, runs and paid off is exactly why we keep ours. I’d rather keep investing my monies.

It’s an old Corolla. I brought it for $1k, but I bet his doesn’t need five whole gears and more time than a senate conformation hearing to get up to 60.

Well I’m not sure if that article mentions this:
“Don’t stare at the general contract number. A player that has millions on his contract doesn’t really have millions initially. Agents, training, contract bonus per performance, bills from injuries, etc. have to be deducted. They still get paid every 2 weeks like the rest of us & have to pay a lot more in taxes.”
I’m sure Kawhi is driving the Tahoe because its paid off, but also because he realized early on how much money he’d give away by default.
